What Causes Black or White Streaks on Washed Clothes

My Laundry Question

What could be causing streaks on my clean washing?

Share a Little Background Info

I have a John Lewis 1603 washing machine. The marks occur more often on a large load but not every time. On whites the marks are grey/black but on dark colours they appear whitish. I use softened water and generally use a shorter wash programme at 40, 50 or 60 degrees.

Lessons Learned

  • The streaks seem to be water based as they come off easily with water.
  • I clean the dispenser drawer regularly.

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

The streaks are coming from soil or detergent build-up in your washer. You need to give your washer a thorough cleaning using the hottest water possible. I have instructions here.

Good luck!
