My Laundry Question

Hello,

Would it be safe to clean a coat in the washing machine made of:

Shell - 85% Polyester & 15% Nylon

Lining - 100% Acrylic, 50% Polyester & 50 % Viscose

Fill - 100% Polyester

Or should I get it dry cleaned? Thank you so much in advance!

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

Can the coat be washed? Yes. Will it look the way you want? Maybe.

My answer that the coat can be washed is based on the materials you have listed. All are washable in cold or warm water with a regular detergent. Do not use a chlorine bleach and wash on the gentle cycle to prevent excessive wringing during the final spin. I also based my answer on the fact that the coat is described as having "polyester fill". This tells me that it is not a tailored coat or jacket that will lose its crispness if washed.

The downside of washing is that the viscose content of the lining may wrinkle badly and will need to be pressed. If the jacket is not well made, the fill may shift and the coat can look "lumpy".

The safest route is dry cleaning if the jacket is new and you don't want to upset the boyfriend. If, however, the jacket is several years old and has been cleaned before, I feel good that washing will be successful. Good luck!
