How to Whiten Vintage Christening Gown

My Laundry Question

How do I remove yellowing stains from baby Christening dress that is 40 years old

Share a Little Background Info

The stain may be a combination of age and baby formula. It was a child's christening dress worn by three babies. It has been stored away in a paper bag in a house attic. I do not believe it has ever been cleaned.

Lessons Learned

  • I have just uncovered it and would like to use it for my grandchild's Christening. I have not attempted to clean it yet

Fabric Content of Item (if appropriate)

Imported fabric from Italy. It is very delicate and may be voile and the separate lining may be cotton

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

Congratulations on your grandchild's christening! To whiten the dress, mix a solution of oxygen-based bleach (OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach, Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach)and cool water. Follow the directions on the package as to amount per gallon of water. Completely submerge the dress and allow it to soak for 24 hours. Check the dress and if the stains are gone, hand wash with a mild detergent. If the stains remain, mix a new solution and soak for another 24 hours.

For future babies, the dress should not be stored in a paper bag or in the attic where temperatures fluctuate. Here are some tips for storage.
