How to Whiten Dingy White Socks

Submit an Entry: Your Laundry Questions and Answers

By Nicole

My Laundry Question

Can I use bleach or clorox to soak white socks to make them white again? And what is the mixture parts? Meaning, 1/2 cup bleach to 2 quarts water? And warm or cold water? How long do I soak them for?

Share a Little Background Info

I have a bunch of white socks that have been woren quite a bit and are losing their white color and would like to know how to bleach them so they look white again. Is it even worth bleaching white socks or should i just buy new ones and not waste my time? THey are in perfectly fine condition just a little discolored is all.

Lessons Learned

  • I have not done anything yet. I wasn't sure the mixture measurements or if it is cold or hot or warm water and how long should i soak them for or is it even worth it?

Fabric Content of Item (if appropriate)

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

If your socks are in good shape (no holes!) then it is worth your time to whiten them. Mix a solution of 1/4 cup chlorine bleach in one gallon of warm water. Allow the socks to soak for 30 minutes. Then wash your socks in hot water adding 3/4 cup chlorine bleach and your regular detergent.

Good luck!
