My Laundry Question

I have some ecru 100% cotton fabric that was stored for a few years. It was never laundered. Now it has some small yellow rusty colored stains all over. I know they are age stains that occur in Florida over time. Is there a way to remove them? I would like to launder to remove stains and prep prior to using the fabric for a project.

Please let me know your recommendations for best removing these stains.

thank you!

Share a Little Background Info

had the fabric for a few years.. was stored with other fabrics. I had purchased fabrics over the years and stored some of it. I have the similar problem on some silks... and am not planning to use the silks.

Lessons Learned

  • I have not tried anything yet as I do not want to set the stain.

Fabric Content of Item (if appropriate)

100% cotton, ecru color

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

To remove yellowing and age spots from cotton fabric, mix a solution of oxygen-based bleach (OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach, Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach) and cool water. Follow the package directions as to how much product per gallon of water. Completely submerge the fabric and allow it to soak for at least eight hours. Check the stains. If they are gone, wash as usual. If they remain, mix a fresh solution and repeat. It may take several soakings to remove the stains but they should come out.

Good luck!
