My Laundry Question

How do I remove red wine from a silk blouse?

Share a Little Background Info

A glass of red wine was slpashed on the blouse. We were at dinner and someone knocked the glass over. The wine spilled over the front of the blouse. We have tried club soda and rinsing with a lot of cold water. the club soda and the water did not remove the stain. The dry cleaner said the area is too large to be responsible for cleaning.

Lessons Learned

  • Club soda was used with cold water. It was blotted and has dried.

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

Silk can be tricky to launder, but since the dry cleaner won't touch it this is worth a try.

Mix a solution of oxygen-based bleach (OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach, Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach) and cool water. Follow the package directions as to how much product per gallon of water. Completely submerge the garment and allow it to soak for at least eight hours. Check the stain. If it is gone, wash as usual. If it remains, mix a fresh solution and repeat. It may take several soakings to remove the stain but it should come out.

When the stain is removed, follow the tips for washing silk to finish.

Good luck!
