Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

The stains on your sheets are a combination of perspiration and body oil and soil. To achieve the best results, you must wash the sheets in hot water with a heavy duty detergent. You may even need to pretreat the stains before washing because body oils can be difficult to remove. Chlorine bleach will not work to remove the stains. It may actually cause white sheets to become yellow which is nearly impossible to remove.

    Good luck!
