How to Remove Mystery Stain from Rayon Dress

Submit an Entry: Your Laundry Questions and Answers

By Gillian

My Laundry Question

What should I use to get a stain out of my Rayon(95%) and Spandex(5%) dress?

And then how should I clean it after?

Share a Little Background Info

I sat in something at lunch today......I don't know what........and it will not come out with just water or water and soap. I need to know where to begin to get out the stain. Can rayon be washed? What about the Spandex?

Lessons Learned

  • I have never tryed anything before. I never even knew this was a fabric honestly
  • Fabric Content of Item (if appropriate)

    Rayon (95%)

    Spandex (5%)

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

Since I don't know the color of your dress or the type of stain, if your dress says it is washable, mix a solution of cool water and oxygen-based bleach (OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach, Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach ) following the directions on the package. Submerge the entire dress and let it soak for 24 hours. Then wash as usual.

Rayon fibers can be weakened by chlorine bleach and Spandex can turn yellow and lose its elasticity. Undiluted bleach should never be applied directly to the fibers. Dilute solutions can be used safely on rayon or cellulosic fibers for stain removal and whitening. However, even dilute solutions will weaken fibers causing them to rip and wear out if used too often.

If the dress says dry clean only, take it to a professional cleaner. Good Luck!
