How to Remove Mildew from Furniture Slip Covers

This is the couch...without the cover.

My Laundry Question

Our finished basement became covered in mold a couple of months ago. Our landlord has finally finished repairs, and professional cleaning of our furniture. However, I had furniture covers on my couch, chair, and ottoman. They are brand new-and were expensive- covers. What do I wash them in to be sure they are clean and free of mold?

Share a Little Background Info

I can't see any mold, but the couch and chair were moldy underneath the covers, so it was in contact with mold. And with the amount of mold that was discovered, it has to have some kind of mold content.

Lessons Learned

  • Run a dehumidifier in the basement.

Fabric Content of Item (if appropriate)

??Cotton, I think. (I know they are both machine washable)

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

Oh my! I'm glad you have most of your problems solved. That is terrible! For your furniture covers, even though you can't see any mold growth, you need to wash them in the hottest water recommended for the fabric. Follow these instructions and be sure to dry the covers completely before putting back on the furniture.

Good luck!
