How to Remove Iodine Stains

Submit an Entry: Your Laundry Questions and Answers

By Robyne McKeown

My Laundry Question

I think the brown stains on my husband's shirt are iodine from his trip to hospital with a cut hand that required stitching. Is there any chance I can remove these stains? The shirt has been washed a number of times and regular stain removers used so this may have set the stain already!

Share a Little Background Info

I think this was from the betadine (iodine solution) used on my husband's hand at the hospital.

There are a couple of brown spots on the front of his shirt.

The blood stains have gone, but not the other brown spots.

Lessons Learned

  • I have tried washing, spraying, soaking and rubbing with soap!

Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com Laundry & Laundry Rooms, says:

Unfortunately, iodine stains are very difficult to remove especially after they have dried. After all of the steps you've taken, the only recommendation I have left is to mix a solution of oxygen-based bleach (OxiClean, Clorox 2, Country Save Bleach, Purex 2 Color Safe Bleach ) and warm water - follow package directions. Submerge the entire shirt and allow to soak for 24 hours. Check the stains. If they remain, repeat the process or if they are gone, wash as usual.

I'm not confident that you can remove them completely but they may lighten significantly. Good luck!
