How do you get bleach residue off of the interior of a dryer drum?

My dad took a load of white towels that had he had left soaking in bleach, rinsed them, and, without putting them through the washing machine first, he put them in the dryer and let 'er rip. No dryer sheet or anything. Now, our dryer smells like bleach and has a streaky, whitish residue all over its interior. It's a new LG machine, stacked on top of the washer, and I like to take good care of it, just as I do with my clothing. Needless to say, I'm horrified and I'm afraid anything I put in there will come out discolored and smelling like bleach. I don't use bleach myself because the smell gives me a headache and makes me sneeze, plus, I'm clumsy and I'm afraid I'll spill it and ruin my clothes. Life would be so much easier if I could use the dryer again, and if everybody knew that new, white towels aren't to be used as clean-up rags.

- Don't leave dad in the laundry room by himself. Things might get ruined.

Unfortunately, you or Dad are going to need to use a bit of elbow grease to clean the dryer drum. Use a pail of lukewarm water and a sponge and wipe down the entire interior of the dryer drum. Rinse the sponge out often and continue until all of the white residue is gone. Rinse and repeat is a good idea.
Keeping pets and small children out of the laundry room, leave the dryer door open for 24 hours to allow it to dry thoroughly and for the chlorine odor to dissipate.
For one last safety measure, put a load of newly washed white towels in the dryer and allow them to dry. They should absorb any remaining bleach traces.
