How to Clean Counted Cross Stitch Pieces with Nicotine Stains

Submit an Entry: Your Laundry Questions and Answers

My Laundry Question

I have 3 counted cross stitch pictures with cigarette smoke stains. Will the smoke stains simply wash out or is there another process other than the ones mentioned

Share a Little Background Info

I was young and in a hurry to finish and frame the pictures as a Christmas gift for my Mother. So I mounted and framed them myself. No glass and not sealed on the back. They hung in my Mother's bedroom for a number of years when she was smoking, so the have smoke staining. I recently found them and would like to use them. They need some help to look great again.

Lessons Learned

  • I have not tried anything yet because I just found them again and I do not want to mess them up. I now know I need to have this kind of project professionally mounted and framed.

Fabric Content of Item (if appropriate)

I have an article on how to clean counted cross-stitch pieces that should help you. For the cigarette smoke stains, try these tips if the stains remain after the initial cleaning.

Good luck!
