How long does the homemade fabric softner keep? How much do you use in a load?

Mother of two children under three. Trying to save money and saw that you had a recipe for homemade fabric softeners and wanted to try it. Was looking for a recipe for hair gel for my oldest. Am going to look at other recipes you have to see what I can make that will save me money.
Lessons Learned
- That its relatively easy and cheap to make household goods if you are willing to look for a recipe and invest the time to make the item.
Mary Marlowe Leverette, Laundry Guide, says:
The Homemade Fabric Softener in this recipe will last indefinitely. You may need to give it a shake now and then before using if separation occurs. You use 1/2 cup per washer load.
