Moth balls have been used for generations to prevent infestations of moths and insects in stored clothing. However, moth balls contain strong chemicals - naphthalene or 1,4-dichlorobenzene - which can be harmful if the fumes are breathed in or irritating to the skin if clothing comes in direct contact. The odor can also be unpleasant and clothing should be aired outside for at least 48 hours.
For a more environmentally-friendly insect deterrent, use dried lavender. Lavender is non-irritating and has a pleasant smell. You'll find that your clothing is just as protected and ready to wear when you remove it from storage.
Simply put the dried lavender into a cotton bag or potpourri ball and hang in closets or place in drawers. Freshly dried lavender should be used at the change of the seasons.
