Guide Review - 20 Mule Team Borax - Laundry Product Review

20 Mule Team Borax has been found on store shelves for more than 115 years. Although once offered as a way to prevent milk from becoming sour and an aid to digestion, (we found better ways) it is still one of nature's best laundry boosters. Borax removes stains by converting some water molecules to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The pH of borax is about 9.5, so it produces a basic solution in water, thereby increasing the effectiveness of bleach and other cleaners in hard water.

20 Mule Team Borax is manufactured by Henkel, Inc. The only ingredient is Sodium Tetraborate. It should not be taken internally and avoid splashing into eyes. Borax is safe for septic tanks and all washers including he (high-efficiency) machines.

Among the many uses are:

  • Detergent Booster - add one-half cup per wash load
  • Laundry Deodorizer - add one-half cup per wash load
  • Condition Hard Water - add one-half cup per wash load
  • Presoak for stains - add 1 tablespoon per gallon of water - soak 30 minutes

Since 20 Mule Team has been around longer than I have, I've used it for many years. What many think of as old-fashioned is actually a natural, green laundry booster. I use it to freshen sweaty clothes and tackle stains. When my sons were small, it was quite effective in removing baby formula and food stains safely with no irritation to their skin.

You can find more uses for 20 Mule Team Borax in the kitchen and bathroom on their site.
