Fish is a protein stain and can be removed by soaking or rubbing the stain with cold water before washing. Never use hot water because it can actually cook the stain and drive it deeper into the fabric fibers. Use this method if the fish is raw or cooked with no added sauces or oils.
Most sauces are oily stains like butter or salad dressing and need a stain-removal pretreatment to remove them. After treating, they also need the hottest water safe for the type of fabric to rinse them away.
If the garment is dry clean only, point out and identify the stain to your professional cleaner. If you are using a home dry cleaning kit, be sure to treat the stain with the provided stain remover before putting the garment in the dryer bag.
