Concentrated laundry detergents have been around in one form or another since the 1960s. Sometimes called “ultra” products, these products offer the same cleaning properties as the old familiar detergents and also help the environment by reducing the use of water. They also save on transportation and shipping costs.

The key to using concentrated products is to make sure you us the right amount of detergent. Be sure to read the product label. Even experienced laundry-doers can guess the right amount incorrectly. There is no need to dilute or use the product any differently than regular detergent.

The most highly concentrated forms are single-dose packs. Read all directions carefully on how to use these products to be sure that they dissolve and disperse properly in the wash water.

Laundry detergents with an HE symbol are designed to use in front load washers and high-efficiency top load washers. These products have low sudsing qualities because he washers use lower levels of water. Excessive suds are difficult to remove with lower water levels.
