The 10 Best Laundry Detergents of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

We tested 29 laundry detergents—here's which brands were total winners

An assortment of laundry detergents we recommend displayed side-by-side on marble countertop

The Spruce Home / Dera Burreson

If you've ever shopped in the laundry aisle, you know that there are probably as many types of laundry detergents as there are clothes in your hamper. Whether they come in the form of a liquid, powder, pod, or sheet, laundry detergents are formulated to clean soiled clothes and leave them smelling and looking fresh.

When choosing a detergent, our advice is to select and properly measure a well-rounded soap. We recommend ones that are not only effective, but also match your personal preferences when it comes to ingredients, scent, environmental impact, price, and type.

That's why we spent hours researching and rigorously testing a number of laundry detergents, including well-known brands like All, Gain, Ecos, and Arm & Hammer. Whether it was chocolate, spaghetti sauce, or a messy splash of wine, we laundered several stained items, such as cotton tees, napkins, and bath towels, in The Lab to observe these detergents in action. To pick the very best laundry detergents, we assessed and scrutinized their effectiveness, compared them to one another, and rated them in a variety of categories.

What We Like
  • Smells incredible

  • Effective stain-fighting and cleansing

  • Leaves items feeling soft

What We Don't Like
  • No unscented options

During our testing process, Gain outperformed a number of other detergents on multiple stains, including chocolate, liquid foundation, and red wine. It also lightened grass stains and tomato sauce, which wasn't the case with many of our other detergents. While it didn't display the same stain-fighting capabilities as a targeted stain remover (nor would we expect it to), we thought it handled some of the stains impressively well. The feel of materials washed with Gain was also pleasantly soft, and all of the clothes felt clean, lightweight, and washed.

The best part is the smell! We would describe it as slightly sweet and fruity, with a nice floral scent mixed in. For the record, we tried the original scent, but discerning noses will be pleased to know that additional scents, such as Apple Mango Tango and Spring Lavender, are available, too.

As with many liquid detergents, you'll want to be sure to measure carefully so you don't add too much to your load. Still, we think it's a great value if you're following directions and not going overboard with measurements. Based on our calculations, the average price per load ($0.19) was less than our calculated median price of the group of detergents tested ($0.25).

One member of our testing team, who has used the same brand of detergent for her entire adult life, was wowed by the Gain Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap Plus Aroma Boost results. "The smell is phenomenal and the stain removing power was competitive ... I am considering switching laundry detergents," she raved. For anyone looking for a dependable brand that smells awesome, we give this detergent our approval.

What We Like
  • No dyes or perfumes; hypoallergenic

  • Convenient design

What We Don't Like
  • Not a great stain remover

As our Best Value pick, we appreciate that the Sensitive Skin Free & Clear Liquid Laundry Detergent from Arm & Hammer not only comes at a wallet-friendly price point (and in a big bottle made for up to 107 loads!), but also has a gentle, hypoallergenic formula free of preservatives, dyes, and perfumes. The formula features—you guessed it—hardworking Arm & Hammer baking soda, drawing on the legacy brand's well-known staple product.

During testing, we found that the detergent had a light chemical smell, which was noticeable if you put it right up to your nose. After washing, however, everything smelled clean. The bottle's design features an easy handle, plus measured markings on the lid to make for simple pouring and portioning.

The one area where this option fell short was on targeted stain removal, which happened with many of the brands we tested. If your household is prone to lots of spills or stains (or lots of young kids!), you may want to keep an extra stain remover on hand, or consider one of the picks in our list that proved more effective. But if you're seeking a budget-friendly choice with gentle cleaning capabilities, this one is definitely worth considering.

  • Convenient to store

  • Eco-friendly, plant-based ingredients

  • Nice and subtle scent

What We Don't Like
  • Not as effective as some other detergents

Laundry detergent sheets are the newest, trendy laundry products out there, but they shouldn’t be overlooked. They’re lightweight and compact, plus they tend to be free of plastic, dyes, fragrances, and optical brighteners, unlike other types of detergents. They also have the added bonus of being easy to store, making them perfect for cramped laundry rooms. In the case of these Grove Co. sheets, they're also effective at caring for your clothes, too. Post washing and drying, the test items we washed with Grove sheets felt less stiff than pre-washed items, and the towel in particular was noticeably softer and fluffier once it came out of the wash. Plus, thanks to the detergent's 100 percent natural essential oils and plant extracts, these sheets have a lavender and bloom scent, and they leave laundry smelling clean.

It's worth noting that, consistent with a number of our picks, these are not a one-size-fits all choice that can handle heavy stain removal. Our testing showed them to be better suited for small and medium loads without heavy stains. And they're above the median price per load that we calculated ($0.40 versus the $0.25 median). But with the overall convenience and eco-friendly design, we still feel they earn their Best Sheets title.

What We Don't Like
  • Packaging has a tendency to leak

For those with sensitive skin, safety and efficacy are of high importance. This All Free Clear 2x Concentrated formula expertly fits the bill. It's made without any dyes or perfumes and comes recommended by dermatologists, pediatricians, and allergists (which is the number one reason why we named it as Best for Sensitive Skin).

In our experience, it’ll remove tough stains and odors, while still being gentle on skin. It stood out from the pack during our testing, and did a good job on the stains we made in the lab, such as chocolate, oil, and wine (especially when compared to other brands we tested). This formula has also been competitive in other categories too, even ranking high on our list of the Best Laundry Detergents for Babies.

It's fragrance-free, but still leaves a light and clean scent behind. During testing, we found that the packaging may leak. Still, we liked that most clothes came out soft and pliable, and our tested towel was fluffy, too (the exception was a white shirt feeling a bit stiff). By our calculations, it's roughly $0.20 a load, below the median price of $0.25, so it's also an excellent value.

What We Don't Like
  • Less stain-fighting ability

  • No unscented option

Marking Gain's second appearance on our list, the powder also received rave reviews for its delightful fragrance and reasonable price per load. We thought it did a solid job of fading the majority of stains and removing a chocolate stain. In our eyes, Gain Original Powder Detergent is a good staple to keep on hand for regular washes or to pair with a trusted stain remover when it comes to heavily soiled items.

The cardboard box package design includes a plastic handle on top for carrying, and we found it easy to use the included measuring cup to scoop out the needed amount. There were five marks on the included measuring cup for small to extra large loads, so it's a breeze to adjust your level of soap, depending on the amount of dirty linens and clothing. With the exception of the linen napkin, tested items also felt soft to the touch as they came out of the dryer.

The fragrance earned high marks, too, just as it did in Gain's liquid counterpart. We noticed the nice scent almost as soon as we opened the box. After everything dried, the fragrance was less strong, but it definitely had a pleasing, clean odor. If you want your clothes to feel soft and smell fresh, we think Gain's powdered version is a great choice.

What We Like
  • Convenient and mess-free

  • Clean smell

  • Competitive stain-fighting abilities

  • No measuring needed

What We Don't Like
  • Pods can be easily ruined if water gets in the container

Pods have many advantages over traditional liquid detergents. For starters, they eliminate the need to measure and pour detergent, because you’ll always use just the right amount. That also means there’s no need to worry about messy spills or drips, and you won't have to leave a bottle, for instance, precariously perched upside-down to eke out one more drop.

We found that pods are just as effective as liquid or powder formulas, too. During our testing in the lab, the Tide Pods rivaled dozens of other competitors in their stain-fighting prowess. The pods cleaned well, and laundered items felt less stiff after going through a cycle. We also like the pleasant scent, which was clean but not overpowering.

The pods were calculated to be right at the median price of $0.25 per load, and we love the overall convenience and pre-measured ease of use. As a result, the value is really there. The one area of caution with pods is that wet hands can quickly ruin a supply, but this isn't unique to Tide by any means.

What We Like
  • Recyclable and compostable packaging

  • Plant-based ingredients

  • Easy to use

What We Don't Like
  • Products get ruined if the box gets wet

As our pick for Best Eco-Friendly, you better bet the laundry sheets from Ecos are an environmentally-conscious laundry detergent. Here's why: they come tucked in recyclable cardboard boxes, and they're formulated without dyes, phthalates, or formaldehyde. Plus, they're a cinch to use. Just add one sheet to each load of wash. If you have a very small laundry room, or are have been buying the smallest detergent possible to save space, sheets are the solve you’ve been looking for.

When it comes to spot removal, like many of our picks, you'll want to supplement with a targeted stain remover for your most soiled clothes. But you can still expect comfy results, as most of the tested items came out of the wash feeling less stiff and smelling great. Speaking of the smell, when the sheets were in the box, we did pick up a very light chemical scent, but after washing, it dissipated and the clothes smelled clean.

At roughly $0.25 per load, they come in under the median price per load, making them an overall easy-to-use, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient choice.

What We Like
  • Effective stain removal

  • Clothing feels soft after wash

  • Easy, pourable bottle

  • Formulated specifically for activewear

What We Don't Like
  • Difference between measurements used on cap and directions

  • Light chemical smell

In a competitive category, the Hex liquid detergent squeaked ahead of its peers. In our lab, we observed that all laundered items felt soft and pliable, with the washcloth in particular coming out light and fluffy. Plus, this detergent's stain-fighting prowess was slightly above-average when compared to other tested detergents.

Here's what we love about it: The bottle is easy to use, lift, and pour from because it's small (this detergent is concentrated, which means you need less of it compared with the others on our list). It did leave a light chemical smell, but not a bothersome one. One area of potential improvement is the clarity between the packaging and the measurements on the cap. We noted that the company uses ounces as the primary measurement listed in the directions, yet milliliters are listed on the measurement cap. You'll need to do a little math, but just remember, 1 milliliter equals 0.03381 ounces.

Despite this minor flaw, we recommend HEX for its stain-fighting abilities and ease of use. At $0.34 per load, it's above the $0.25 median, but we think the value is there, especially if you want to save space in your laundry room (or lighten your load when traveling to the laundromat).

What We Like
  • Lightweight packaging

  • Solid seal to protect powder

  • Scented options available, too

What We Don't Like
  • Average stain-fighting abilities

When it comes to our choice for Best Unscented, there's lots to appreciate with Molly's Suds Unscented Laundry Detergent Powder, including many of the thoughtful details behind the package design and usability. For starters, the scoop is small and the formula is concentrated, so you'll get a lot of product and uses from just one bag. The package is also light and easy to carry when buying groceries or traveling to your laundry room. It also has a sandwich-like seal, protecting the contents inside.

As far as stain-fighting abilities, we would describe those as fairly average, but we still see a lot to appreciate in the formula. It's unscented, free of dyes, and safe for most sensitive skin. Plus, at $0.21 per load, it's less expensive than the $0.25 median.

In the lab, it was consistent with a lot of our favorite picks. For example, it didn't excel in targeted stain removal, but still showed prowess as a detergent for those regular washes where you're not dealing with heavily soiled items. Oh, and if you find that you enjoy the formula, but want a scented option down the road, they have plenty of options including citrus, eucalyptus, and peppermint.

What We Like
  • Pleasant but not overpowering scent

  • Easy to use

  • Brightened whites

What We Don't Like
  • Not as effective at stain removal

Perhaps it is not a surprise that another Gain product made it to the top of our list for scented detergents. This time it's in pod form. Based on our experience with these pods in the lab, we wouldn't change a thing about them. Our test items were left smelling clean, but the scent wasn't overpowering at all. Plus, we appreciated their cleaning ability, too, because it even appeared to brighten whites.

In the case of Gain Flings, even the packaging earned a thumbs-up. The plastic container was light and easy to use and lift. It doesn't get much simpler than dropping a pod into the wash basin of your machine. Usually one pod will do. When it came to stain removal, like many of the detergents we tested, a marked difference was made in the stains, but they were still visible. In other words, these pods won't fully replace your favorite stain remover. For a regular wash, it did the trick, and left our towel feeling fluffy.

This pick is priced right at the median of our tested products ($0.25 per load), but provided better results than many others. They're available in multiple scents, and refill packs are sold, so you can reuse the plastic container to your heart's content.

Final Verdict

The best laundry detergent, in our experience, is the Gain Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap Plus Aroma Boost. It's effective, has a pleasant smell, and is easy on your wallet. But there are plenty of other great options on the shelves and online, including Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin Free & Clear Laundry Detergent. Not only is it cost-effective, but it also has a baking soda-based formula that's easy on your skin.

Other Options We Tested

Love Home and Planet Ultra Concentrated Laundry Detergent: There was plenty to appreciate when it came to this eco-friendly option. All of the laundry smelled clean after being washed and dried, the smell was pleasant, and we appreciated the auto-dose cap that was easy to use and didn't lead to messes like certain other cap styles. Ultimately, though, these pluses didn't quite elevate it above other choices that performed better on stains and offered better value.

Blueland Laundry Starter Set: Surprisingly, we did not have a lot of success with these popular tablets. In particular, after going through the wash, bits of spaghetti sauce remained on the napkin and the grass stain seemed to transfer onto other clothes. After the laundry was dry, we could still smell some of the leftover stains, subtly mixed together, which has us thinking that some residue was left behind on the textiles, which isn't ideal. It's worth noting that we've had good experiences with other Blueland products, so we still see potential in their line and will be keeping an eye to see if they make any changes to their detergent formula.

Seventh Generation Concentrated Laundry Detergent Liquid Free & Clear: During our lab testing, we found that the majority of the stains remained visible after washing with Seventh Generation. In one unique case, a member of our team used Seventh Generation at home and had a good experience with it. She was happy with this brand of detergent, but did not use it solely on tough set-in stains. If you have a trusted stain remover you'd use in conjunction with this detergent, then Seventh Generation might be a winner for you.

How We Tested the Laundry Detergents

We put 29 laundry detergents to the test in The Lab during a rigorous hands-on process. First, using detergent brand guidelines, our testers started wash cycles with previously-stained items. One cotton T-shirt, athletic polyester T-shirt, terry cloth towel, and linen napkin were included, all marked with three to four stains that included jojoba oil, chocolate, foundation, mud, grass, and in the case of the linen napkin, spaghetti sauce. While the items were washed, duplicate fresh stains were created so our testers could compare results.

Testing Laundry Detergents for Type and Scent

Once items were washed and dried, testers assessed the overall cleanliness and stain removal effectiveness of each laundry detergent, paying careful attention to each stain. Testers also carefully assessed scent by smelling each item and noting whether or not it smelled clean or contained residual smells from the stains. A feel, or texture examination, was also completed, allowing testers to check for softness, fluffiness, and any other changes noticeable by touch. Each product's ease of use was noted as well, with testers rating how simple it was (or wasn't!) to measure and add detergent to washers.

After testing was completed for all 29 detergents, participants considered the overall value of each product, and determined whether or not they would recommend a detergent, and why. This set of data was then shared with our editors, who boiled it down to a clear and concise set of categorized recommendations that we believe are the best laundry detergents available on the market.

What to Look for in a Laundry Detergent

Type

Laundry detergent powders, liquids, pods, and sheets all effectively clean your clothes, says Angela Bell, cleaning expert and Grove Guide at Grove Collaborative. It’s largely a matter of preference. “Liquids and powders are the more traditional forms that many people are familiar with,” she says. “Pods or powder packs are great options for people traveling to a laundromat, as they are super portable.”

Laundry detergent sheets, a newer product in the laundry world, are also great. They're lightweight, plastic-free, environment-friendly, and save space. “These sheets, similar in appearance to dryer sheets, dissolve completely in the drum of any machine, even HE (high-efficiency), and get clothes as clean as anything else,” she says. Two examples of laundry sheets are included on this list: Grove Co.'s Laundry Detergent Sheets, our recommendation for best sheets, and Ecos Plastic-Free Laundry Detergent Sheets, our pick for best eco-friendly.

Washing Conditions

Most modern detergents are designed for both traditional and high-efficiency (HE) machines, says Bell. Still, it’s worth checking the label because HE machines do need a detergent that doesn’t produce excess suds, adds Marilee Nelson, cleaning expert, environmental consultant, certified building biologist, and cofounder of Branch Basics. In some cases, the dosage varies, too. “If using pods or sheets in a HE machine, it is best to place the pod or sheet in the drum of the machine, rather than in the detergent compartment. This ensures it will dissolve completely during the cycle," Nelson says.

Beyond form (pods versus liquid, for example), there are many different types of laundry detergent—stain-fighting, fragrance-free, etc. But all types of detergent effectively clean your clothes when used properly, says Bell. More importantly, take note of the care instructions. Different fabrics require different temperatures and sometimes require hand-washing or dry cleaning, she says.

To prolong the life of your clothing (and save energy), Nelson suggests using cold water and a laundry detergent that tackles stains no matter the temperature. Just be sure to wash all delicate fabrics on a shorter, less agitated cleaning cycle.

Scent

Laundry detergents also come in many different scents, from florals to fresh linen. A number of our selections received rave reviews from our six testers for their scents, including our best scented, Gain Original Flings Laundry Detergent, and our best overall, Gain Laundry Detergent Liquid Soap Plus Aroma Boost. Just note: Artificial fragrances can irritate people with allergies or especially sensitive skin, like babies. In these instances, look for laundry detergents scented with essential oil or a free and clear version, which won’t contain any synthetic fragrance. To start, consider our recommendations for best for sensitive skin, All Liquid Laundry Detergent, and best unscented, Molly's Suds Laundry Detergent Powder, if you’re particularly sensitive to strong scents.

FAQ
  • Does laundry detergent expire?

Surprisingly, yes! “Laundry detergent will grow less effective after the expiration date, so it’s ideal to use it up before or shortly after,” explains Bell. “The oils in many fragrances, especially natural essential oils, can lose their scent or become rancid-smelling over time, and certain ingredients will break down, leaving your clothes less than clean," she says. In other words, pay attention to your detergent's expiration date, and avoid buying in bulk, especially if you know you won't use your supply in a timely fashion.

  • Can you mix bleach and laundry detergent?

“There is no reason to use bleach to clean laundry,” says Nelson. “It's much safer for you and your clothes to team up a nontoxic whitener or brightener with your laundry detergent.” Regardless, it’s always best to follow the manufacturer's instructions on your washing machine for using bleach in your laundry cycle, says Bell.

  • How much laundry detergent should you use per load?

“Many detergents these days are ultra-concentrated and require only a tablespoon or two per load,” says Bell. Always use the product according to directions on the label, adds Nelson. “Most of us use more detergent than necessary for our wash loads, thinking that more means cleaner clothes,” she explains.

  • How should you store laundry detergent?

Laundry detergents should be kept in a cool dry place, where the product can't be reached by children. If you're worried about spills in the cabinet, consider placing them in a plastic container to keep them organized. Never remove detergents from their original packaging.
