Color Removers in the Laundry

By Mary Marlowe Leverette, About.com

Definition:

Color removers use sodium hydrosulfite to remove dyes from fabric. They are usually used to remove transferred dye from white clothes that are accidentally washed with colors that faded on the whites (pink underwear). They can also be used to remove rust stains from fabric and whiten dingy clothes.

Some dyes cannot be completely removed with color removers. However, it may be possible to remove enough color to permit redyeing to another color.
