While HE washers do require the use of he detergent formulas, the "old-fashioned" detergent boosters can still be used in the machines. Detergent boosters help whiten whites, remove stains, act as a softener and rinse agent. Here's how and when to add each one whether your HE machine is a front loader or top loader:
Baking Soda
Sprinkle 1/2 cup baking soda into the washer tub as you load the clothes. Baking soda acts as a natural brightener and deodorizer.
Borax
Sprinkle 1/2 cup borax into the washer tub with the dry clothes. Be sure there are no lumps that may not dissolve if you are using cold water. Borax works as a water softener and deodorizer.
White Distilled Vinegar
White distilled vinegar should be added to the fabric softener dispenser so it will be added during the rinse cycle. Vinegar helps to remove any detergent and soil that is clinging to clothes so it rinses away cleanly leaving your clothes clean and soft.
