Gifts for Teens

Parents / Jaclyn Mastropasqua

Teenagers are a unique bunch who are in the process of finding their passions and exploring themselves as people in the world. Because teens are constantly changing and generally aren’t easy to impress, some of us are unsure of what gifts to give them for holidays and special occasions. But to find the best gifts for teens, all you need to do is consider their personal interests and maturity level. Then keep reading this list for some suggestions to get you started.

“Look for gifts that boost self-esteem, increase social interactions, promote less screen time, and connect families together,” says Reena B. Patel, positive psychologist and licensed educational board certified behavior analyst. “Teens need gifts like books on coping with stress and fostering healthy habits, and stress-relieving gifts like fidget toys.”

To find the best gifts for teens, we surveyed 774 parents from our research panel as well as 101 parents on our own staff to what teens are still playing with. We also used our own knowledge of the latest products and scoured through user reviews and ratings to see what people are buying for teens these days. From arts and crafts supplies to video games, this comprehensive list features the best gifts teens will actually use and appreciate.

Our Review Process

Picking the best gifts for teens involved a few different steps. First, we conducted a survey with 774 parents from our research panel as well as 101 parents and caregivers on our staff, asking them about what toys their teens love most. We asked questions about the setup, durability, and entertainment value of their kids’ favorite toys, plus what the teens and parents liked most about them. The age-appropriate toys with the highest average rating (and the best commentary from the parents) made this list. For the other gifts, we looked throughout the internet and on social media to see what teenagers are gravitating towards these days. We sifted through hundreds of products and pulled the ones with the best star ratings and customer reviews.

Factors to Consider When Buying Gifts for Teens

When it comes to buying gifts for teens, there are a few factors you’ll want to keep in mind to make sure you find the right item. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to buying gifts for anyone, especially teens, but there are some helpful points to consider:

  • Personal Interests: Every teenager is different in what piques their interest. Some teenagers are interested in video games and sports while others gravitate more toward fashion and the arts. Talk to them about what they’re into before you begin shopping.
  • Maturity Level: The gift for a teen will vary based on whether or not they are on the younger or older side of the age spectrum. “During these years, teens are navigating new relationships, peer pressure, self-identity, and increased exposure to societal norms through social media,” says Berry Mc-Ghee. “Parents should avoid gifts that perpetuate harmful stereotypes or reinforce an excessive focus on appearance.”
  • Trends and Gender Norms: Trends come and go but teens are more likely to be interested in hopping on them while they’re hot. “Teens may feel tremendous pressure to keep up with others and have the latest and greatest material things,” says Kelman. “Socially, teens are trying to fit in with their peer group.” That said, they may want a product that went viral on TikTok or an item their favorite influencer has been spotted using lately. You’ll want to pay attention to these when looking for gifts for teens, but be sure to thoroughly vet them to make sure they are appropriate. Additionally, many gifts are marketed towards girls or boys. However, the reality is any teen can gravitate toward whatever they like. Just because sports are generally more catered towards boys, that doesn’t mean a girl won’t be interested in sports-themed bedroom decor. The same idea applies to boys who are interested in makeup and may want a new set of brushes for the holiday season.
  • Cost: Gifts for teens will vary in cost depending on the season and brand. Whether or not you’re interested in spending a few hundred dollars or looking for a more affordable option, there are options available to fit your budget.

Your Questions, Answered

What are some popular gifts for teens?

Popular gifts for teens vary based on the year and season, but there are a few evergreen staples that tend to make the cut. According to Kelman, girls typically like clothing, jewelry, makeup, and things to enhance their room decor. As for boys, they may like sports items, video games, clothes, and Lego architecture sets. That said, any teen regardless of gender, can gravitate towards a number of different activities so you’ll want to feel it out based on the individual.

What should I avoid giving a teen?

According to Patel, you’ll want to avoid giving teenagers video games that contain graphic images and bloody, violent scenarios. “Research indicates that over time, this exposure can lead to overall desensitization of violence or suffering, as well as increased aggression in dealing with conflict, and lack of empathy,” she adds.

Berry-McGhee says some gifts to stay away from include overly mature clothing or items promoting negative body image.
