How to Make Homemade Fabric Freshener - Homemade Fabric Refresher

Commercial fabric refreshers, like Febreze Spray, Tide Swash and Fresh Fabric, are a large category in laundry care. Our lifestyles no longer give us time to hang clothes outside to air and absorb the freshness of a spring breeze. So, we use commercial formulas to simulate the same level of freshness.

If you like the convenience but not the price of these sprays, you can make them at home. There are several "recipes" available. Some use commercial fabric softeners and scent enhancers like Ultra Downy, Downy Unstopables, Ultra Purex or Purex Complete Crystals. Some use essential oils that can be found in locally or online. Or, you can green up the recipes that use commercial fabric softeners by using a plant-based softener formula like Method, Seventh Generation or Vaska brands.

It takes very little equipment to make homemade fabric refresher - just some measuring tools and an empty 20 - 24 ounce spray bottle (a funnel is handy for filling the bottle if you don't have a steady hand). Select the recipe that appeals to you and give it a try. I can promise that you'll save lots of money!

Recipe One - Fabric Refresher Using Fabric Softener

  • 1/8 Cup of your favorite fabric softener
  • 2 Tablespoons baking soda
  • Hot water

Place fabric softener and baking soda in an empty 20-24 ounce spray bottle. Fill bottle with hot water, shake well to combine. Shake bottle each time before using.

Recipe Two - Fabric Refresher Using Fabric Softener

  • 1/8 Cup of your favorite fabric softener
  • 2 Tablespoons white distilled vinegar
  • Hot water

Place fabric softener and vinegar in an empty 20-24 ounce spray bottle. Fill bottle with hot water, shake well to combine. Shake bottle each time before using.

NOTE: Increasing the amount of white distilled vinegar will better neutralize odor. You can use up to 1/2 cup.

Recipe Three - Fabric Refresher Using Fabric Softener

  • 1/8 Cup of your favorite fabric softener
  • 2 Tablespoons isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
  • Hot water

Place fabric softener and rubbing alcohol in an empty 20-24 ounce spray bottle. Fill bottle with hot water, shake well to combine. Shake bottle each time before using.

Recipe Four - Fabric Refresher Using Essential Oils

  • 1 Cup baking soda
  • Hot water
  • 10-12 drops of your favorite essential oil

Pour baking soda into spray bottle. Add hot water to fill 20-24 ounce bottle. Add drops of essential oil - as much or as little as you'd like. Shake bottle well to dissolve baking soda. Shake bottle each time before using.

Recipe Five - Fabric Refresher Using Essential Oils

  • 8 drops lavender oil
  • 4 drops bergamot oil
  • 4 drops clove oil
  • 2 drops oil of peppermint
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • distilled water

Combine the ingredients in a 20 to 24 ounce spray bottle and shake well.

    How to Use

Always shake each bottle well - no matter the recipe you use. If the spray nozzle is clogged, simply rinse under hot water.

Hold the spray bottle at least 8-12 inches away from the garment or fabric. Spray lightly in sweeping motions. Do not over wet fabric or spray too close as it may leave residue on the fabric.

Allow the fabric or garment to dry thoroughly before using. It should hang in a breezy spot, away from direct sunlight. Putting on a damp garment can result in excessive wrinkling. Storing a damp garment can lead to mold or mildew.
